Sample Vaccination Shortages Essay

Words 2,194

On May 14, 1796, Dr. Jenner was the first to take steps in inoculating against smallpox.  Thanks to those first steps of Dr. Jenner, others have come up with cures and immunizations against once-common diseases such as syphilis and typhoid.  From the battlefield when the U.S. Defense Department reported all armed forces would be vaccinated against anthrax to schools where children are sent home reminders about “flu season” with a school board suggestion to receive a vaccination everyone for some reason is immunized to help keep the human body healthy—starting from birth where a child is inoculated against approximately twelve different diseases ranging from Diphtheria to Polio. For more than 15 years our nation’s children have had steady access to vaccines; vaccine-preventable diseases are currently at or near all-time lows and childhood immunization coverage levels have been at an all-time high during the last several years. This success is partly due to the innovative and effective role of the private sector (often in partnership with academia and government) in vaccine development and production, and the widespread use of licensed vaccines.  Private companies first brought several childhood vaccines, routinely recommended in the U.S., to the market.  Competition among private pharmaceutical companies has resulted in substantial innovations as they play for fiscal reasons, which means for the consumer newer and safer vaccines. However, there have been minor disruptions in production, but those that have occasionally occurred in the past have been resolved by mobilizing vaccine from national stockpiles, through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and partners working with manufacturers to increase vaccine supplies.  Of late, some childhood vaccinations have been in short supply due to several reasons ranging from companies leaving the market to insufficient stockpiles.
