Essay Discussing Political Terrorism using Inductive Analysis

Sample Essay

Scholars all over the world have been trying to define the word Political Terrorism. Instead of finding an answer they are becoming more and more entangled in its terminology and ideas. Amongst them all, the most extensively acceptable definition is the one offered by Yonah Alexander. He explains political terrorism as:

“The use of violence against random civilian targets in order to intimidate or to create generalized pervasive fear for the purpose of achieving political goals.” (Alexander XIV)

This description is precise and is regularly quoted by scholars, but it lacks a vital aspect of terrorism i.e. international connections. Terrorists cannot impose terror without the finances and infrastructure facilities that they obtain from international connections.

Somewhat similar is the intricate definition given by Alex P. Schmid who analyzed numerous definitions prior to arriving at the following conclusion:

“Terrorism is an anxiety-inspiring method of repeated violent action, employed by clandestine individual groups or state actors, for idiosyncratic, criminal or political reasons, a whereby-in contrast to assassination-the direct targets of violence is not the main targets.” (Schmid, and Jongman 28)
