The novel The Pearl is the story of a man by the name of Kino by John Steinbeck, a man who was born in the year 1902 at a place known as Salinas in California. He tells the story of Kino, his wife Juana and their baby son Coyotito. They live in a brush house by the seaside where by one day they are turned away from the hospital because they cannot pay for the treatment of their son who is bitten by a scorpion.

They earn their living by harvesting pearls, which they do together. The day they are turned away from the hospital, Kino gets the largest pearl he has ever seen and decides the money he gets from the sale would be used for a church wedding and the education of his son. He has buried his pearl at the corner of his house, after he reburies it under his mat one day he is awoken by an intruder digging, where they fight living Kino bloodied. Kino’s wife Juana thinks that the pearl is evil and she is of the opinion that they should abandon the pearl. (Steinbeck 23-89)
