Sample Essay

George Orwell is well known for the satire that is rampantly present in his literary works, by taking up grave and serious issues, such as war and death and destruction and presenting them in a manner that may border on sarcasm and black humour; 1984 is one of those novels.

The novel has dark themes that are rooted in the ideology of the Utopian concept, where Orwell manages to reverse the usual design of perfection. He does this by showing that development in technology and after the invasion of nuclear wars, a totalitarian government might not be too far behind, where every human action would be monitored by telescreens.

There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live—did live, from habit that became instinct—in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized. (Orwell)
