Agrobacterium tumerfaciens is a bacteria generally used by biotechnology engineers around the world to genetically transform plants. In nature, this microbe is liable for inducing a tumor-based pathogenesis known as Crown-Gall disease pictured at right. The cancerous growth is caused by the genetic transformation of the plant by the microbe. Agrobacterium is not only a naturally happening interspecies genetic transformer, but some of the sequences it is inserting were stolen previously from a plant at some point in its history. The Agrobacteria is an excellent model of interspecies gene transfer and genetic construction in action. (more…)

A significant number of persons experience from high levels of trait anxiety. Trait anxiety may be linked to a scrupulous gene for the serotonin transporter (5HTT) protein. Those scoring high on anxiety (as measured by the NEO-PI neuroticism scale) were found to have a short variation of a polymorphic genetic allele coding for the serotonin transporter. Persons with the long variant scored drastically lower in anxiety (neuroticism). The short form of this gene results in concentrated 5HT transport and thus greater availability of 5HT at the postsynaptic site. (more…)

Long-Term Effect of Reproductive Technologies: Essay

Introduction

Reproductive technologies are measures used to bypass the problems of infertility. These technologies involve exclusion of oocytes–oocyte is an immature ovum, commonly referred to as an ‘egg cell’ and their manipulation outside the woman’s uterus. The first IVF or the test-tube baby was born in 1978- Louise Brown- in England. Since the birth of Louise Brown, there has been much enhancement made in the field of reproductive technologies.  Many more types of procedures are apt available to assist infertile couples or single individuals.  Some of these procedures include: (more…)

Genetically Modified Organisms: Essay

Abstract

Ecologists and other scientists have long expressed concerns about the possible effect of releasing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) into the environment, while others emphasize their possible environmental benefits. The broad consequences of national and international regulations underscore the policy and research communities’ need for current scientific information and for awareness of where informational gaps occur. There is a current emphasis on crop plants, but developments of genetically engineered fish, trees, and microbes may alter perspectives. (more…)

Programmed cell death (PCD) is a significant mechanism in both development and homeostasis in adult tissues for the elimination of either superfluous, infected, transformed or damaged cells by the launch of an intrinsic suicide program. One form of PCD is apoptosis, which is distinguished by the maintenance of intact cell membranes during the suicide process to allow adjacent cells to engulf the dying cell so that it does not release its contents and trigger a local inciting reaction. Cells undergoing apoptosis usually display a characteristic morphology, including fragmentation of the cell into membrane-bound apoptotic bodies, nuclear and cytoplasmic condensation and endolytic cleavage of the DNA into small oligonucleosomal fragments (Steller, 1445). Slide One

By the end of the 19th century, most but not all scientists had accepted the tenets of thermodynamics. Key elements of thermodynamics, or the study of heat, are:

  • Atoms and molecules are responsible for the physical and chemical properties of substances
  • Heat is a form of energy
  • Atoms and molecules move faster (i.e. increase their kinetic motion) when heat is added
