Mononucleosis is generally a self-limiting, although sometimes protracted, and often painful illness. While specific treatment is rarely necessary, the potential complications make it necessary that patients with this illness be under the care of a physician. Mononucleosis is believed to spread through saliva. If someone is infected, they can help avert spreading the virus to others by not kissing them and by not sharing food, dishes, glasses, and utensils until several days after the fever has abated. In addition to getting plenty of bed rest, these steps can help relieve symptoms:
- Drink plenty of water and fruit juices. Fluids help ease fever and sore throat and stop dehydration.
- Take an over-the-counter pain reliever. Using pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen as needed. But aspirin should not be given to a child under age 16 as it may trigger a rare but potentially fatal disorder known as Reye’s syndrome.
- Gargle with salt water Several times a day to relieve a sore throat by mixing one-half teaspoon salt in a glass of warm water.
Most signs and symptoms of mono ease within a few weeks but it may be two to three months before you feel totally normal.
