Introduction
This paper discusses deviance as interpreted through three theoretical perspectives, the Functionalist theory, the Conflict Theory and the Interactionalist theory. Then it discusses which theory seems more appropriate than others.
The Functionalist Theory
The functionalist theory was based on the work of Spencer, Durkheim, Parsons, and Merton and what makes the functionalist different from other theories is that it sees crime and deviance in a positive light. In the functionalist view ordinary crime is not a threat to the society rather for a society to function properly there is a need for a certain level of crime. But according to this view, the crime and deviance have to be within limits and the society’s reaction to criminal acts as recognition of what is appropriate and what is not. (Theories of Deviance)
