Rock and roll also called rock ‘n’ roll is a hybrid variety of music that was created in the United States in the 1950s, and quickly reached the rest of the world. It later developed into a variety of sub-categories of what is now labeled as Rock. From the mid-1950s to the present, rock has been one of the most popular forms of music in the western world. In the earliest form of rock and roll, in the late 1940s, the piano was the lead instrument, and undoubtedly, rock and roll was a straight outcome of boogie-woogie piano.
Rock and roll emerged as a distinct musical style in America in the late 1940s, when it was called R&B or rhythm and blues, and, with the present title given in the early 1950s, though essentials of rock and roll could be heard in blues records even in the 1920s. An early form of rock and roll, though not the original, was rockabilly, which united elements of blues, boogie-woogie, and jazz with influence from long-established Appalachian folk music, gospel, and country and western. Going back even further, rock and roll can trace one ancestry to the old Five Points district of mid-19th century New York City, the setting of the first blend of heavily rhythmic African shuffles and sand dances with European genres, mostly the Irish jig.
