For years, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) went untreated because doctors had not yet defined the appropriate parameters and behaviors. AD/HD is a chronic disorder that can extend through adulthood and have many negative effects on home, school and social life (Children’s Disabilities Information, 1).

Now, there is a set of clearly defined criteria, which helps parents and adults understand the disorder and provides children with the most beneficial treatment. By conservative estimates, it is estimated that between 3-5% of U.S. schoolchildren have this disorder (Children’s Disabilities Information, 1).

Inattention is one symptom. Behavior includes failure to give close attention to details or careless mistakes in school work, chores, or other activities; does not sustain attention to tasks or play activities; appears not to listen to what’s said; cannot organize work; avoids anything that requires “sustained mental effort”; and tends to be forgetful (Munden, 15).

The primary symptom that sets this disorder apart from Attention Deficit Disorder is hyperactivity. Behaviors include constant fidgeting with hands or feet; leaving seat in classroom when expected to remain seated; running or climbing “excessively in situations in which it is inappropriate”; “unduly noisy in playing” rather than participating quietly in activities; and “exhibits a persistent pattern of excessive motor activity that is not substantially modified by social context or demands” (Munden, 16).
