Abstract

This paper compares two short stories Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” are two short stories from different time periods but both stories are written in the unique styles by authors. Each story explores the extremes and excesses of the rich and the noble. This paper looks the two stories analyzing the styles of the authors and also the dark and depressing themes of the stories.

The short story by Shirley Jackson titled “The Lottery” is a tale of a brutal and shocking stoning of an innocent but doomed woman, this tale strongly contradicts the modern traditional values. The whole story is marked with symbolism, which is used by the author to illustrate the evil of capitalism and power. Jackson uses imagery and representation to show a human tendency to continue traditions that are both meaningless and harmful.
