After the conquest of Gaul, the Senate ordered him to relinquish his military command and return to Rome. The order was also promoted by Pompey who had joined the Senate and was apprehensive of Caesar’s military power. Caesar refused the Senate’s orders and entered Roman territory with legions loyal to him. This resulted in the Roman Civil War which Caesar won. With the defeat of the Senate’s army, he was recognized as the supreme ruler and leader of Rome. As the unrivaled and absolute ruler of Rome, Caesar initiated reforms in the government and in the social structure of Rome, and also created the Julian calendar. His centralization of the Roman bureaucracy eventually earned him the title of ‘dictator for eternity’

The most that are known about Julius Caesar is about his military campaigns mostly in letters and speeches of Cicero including the historical transcripts written by Sallust. According to these authors, Julius Caesar was one of the greatest generals in history. His social reforms were very popular as he had proposed a law that called for the redistribution of public lands to landless peasants. He was supported by Pompey, who brought in soldiers to enforce the distribution by force because there were many opponents to this social development program.

However, ‘jealousy’ is a very human emotion and his victories and popularity earned him the jealousy of many prominent and influential Romans. So, on March 15, 44 BC, Caesar was brutally murdered by a group of Senators led by Marcus Junius Brutus. After his assignation, civil war again broke out in Rome but the constitutional governments never again could acquire power. After Caesar’s death, his adopted inheritor Octavian acquired power in Rome and thus began a new era of the Roman Empire.
