American mosques built in the last few decades, in the period in which Muslims are beginning to feel at home in the United States, are nearly universally architect-designed. And structural features that vary significantly, particularly among the more elaborate mosques, all of them fall there are those that symbolize a reinterpretation of tradition, sometimes joint with elements of American architecture.

Mosques that have endeavored a reinterpretation of conventional architecture in the American landscape have had assorted results. The Islamic Cultural Center (ICC) of Manhattan is one instance. It was designed by the prestigious firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and completed in 1991 at the intersection of Third Avenue and 96th Street. The project was distinguished from others as an effort was made to find an image that would please both Muslims and the larger, neighboring society. The mosque was designed for the use of Muslims in the New York City metropolitan area, who comprise high-profile, influential Muslim diplomats and others attached to the United Nations, consulates, and trade offices. In addition to all the others who live in New York City and the neighboring suburbs.

The Mosque is one of the most outstanding buildings in the City. The thin crescent Moon is the preeminent icon of the Islamic faith and can be seen here atop the dome as well as the minaret.  Like all mosques, this one was built to face Mecca, in Saudi Arabia.
