Egypt is one of the countries which are accused of human rights violations by different organizations. According to the U.S. State Department report on Egypt, it appears that the government has been subjecting its residents to serious human rights violations from a state of emergency to the various unlawful detentions and torture of those who are considered as a threat to the government of president Hosni Mubarak.(State Department, 2007) According to Human Rights Watch, the government has cracked down on the opposition like the Muslim Brotherhood activist by torturing and imprisoning them indefinitely. In addition in the wake of a series of bomb blasts, hundreds of people have been held without any specific charge against them. (HRW Country Report 2007)
According to a 2004 report by Freedom House, the political situation in Egypt is not democratic and the religious parties are not allowed to participate in the political process. In addition due to the imposition of emergency, the people cannot exercise their political rights. The press is also not free and is subjected to restrictions. (Freedom House, 2004) in addition, the broadcast media is also run either by the government or those who support Hosni Mubarak. This is further helped by the law which is not clear about the freedom of speech and targeting the president and his family in the press.
According to Amnesty International (2007), Egypt continues to play an important role in “War on Terror” as it is accused of holding and torturing people and secretly detaining them although the government of Egypt continues to deny it. However, according to AI the UN Special Report on promotion and protection of human rights was denied access to Egypt by the Egyptian government.
