Marc Chagall was born July 7, 1887, in Vitsyebsk, Russia, and was educated in art in Saint Petersburg and, from 1910, in Paris, where he stayed until 1914. The Russian-born French painter and designer, distinguished for his surrealistic ingenuity. He is recognized as one of the most important painters and graphic artists of the 20th century. His work regard subjects in a vein of humor and fantasy that draws intensely on the resources of the unconscious. Chagall’s personal and exceptional imagery is often suffused with exquisite poetic inspiration. Chagall occupies an exclusive place in world art.
- In 1962 Marc Chagall was commissioned to create 12 stained-glass windows for the Hadassah Hospital of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem. It was a major magnum opus and he said, “I felt my father and my mother were looking over my shoulder, and behind them were Jews, millions of other vanished Jews of yesterday and a thousand years.”
- In 1964 he completed a canvas that covers the ceiling of the Opera in Paris, and two extremely large murals now in the lobby of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.
