The choice Shakespeare made for his source materials is greatly influenced by time, culture and placement. Medieval English historical materials used in writing literature, especially for plays were familiar to the audience (Chernaik 12).
This is because a majority of the audience were aware of the facts that surrounded the scenes in the plays. This therefore meant that play writers like Shakespeare could not alter the facts commonly known to the audience nor could they create fallacies (Chernaik 12). However, this does not mean the writers could not shape their materials to create dramatization. Materials used in writing gave the plays a dramatic effect which gave the playwright make the audience to freely interpret facts. This therefore implies that facts that are often derived from medieval plays may not be stable but rather are products of interpretation.
