Why does the church believe that both are important?
As indicated above, Paul shows that faith should come first and then works follow. Christians believe that once an individual has faith and trusts in God, the God manifests himself through the individual by performing signs and miracles. These are considered to be the fruits of salvation.
This is clearly indicated in the book of James (Chapter 2:14-26). Here, the scriptures question the integrity of faith that shows no fruit or has no works. It is illustrated that works are outward manifestations of faith. The scriptures say; “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also” (James 2:26). These illustrations demonstrate that both faith and works are integral parts of the Christian faith.
