As part of the course I role-played as a counselor and after that exercise, I have realized several things which are discussed in the paper.
Even though transference and countertransference are natural behaviors and it is experienced in any counseling relationship; however, it is very important to avoid these behaviors to keep them in check. It is important to realize that these feelings are quite real and come from a person’s inner emotions which build up because of past experiences and events. During counseling, it is important to know and understand the dangers which are inherent in transference and countertransference, when it is ignored or denied. It is important to acknowledge it. In addition, it is important for the counselor to know his or her countertransference tendency so that it does not interfere with the client’s ability to accept the counseling outcome. (Jackson, 2002-3)
