People enter into the field of anthropology for a variety of reasons. Some may enter it by accident meaning that they never had the intention of wanting to become an anthropologist. Others, however, may have wanted to join the field ever since they had decided what they wanted to do in life. The following is an ethnography written by someone who married a person who was a social anthropologist. Vidya Dehejia, curator of Indian art at the Smithsonian Institution, is up to the task. She sets the scene with an invaluable chapter explaining ancient Indian theories of art and aesthetics, including the responsibilities of the viewer. Most important is the realization that “the consistent fabric of Indian life was never rent by the Western dichotomy between religious belief and worldly practice” hence the easy coexistence in India of extreme religious asceticism and the overt eroticism that pervades temples like Khajuraho and Patan. From the ancient cities of the Indus valley, the development of Buddhist art (which by the 12th century had faded away in the land of its birth), the glorious paintings of Ajanta, the luxury of Mughal art and architecture, part of the British Raj, to today’s artistic ferment. Our world is a blend of different cultures and races having distinct lifestyles, rituals, and values. These qualities make human societies different from other animals. Some of the people on our planet have lived in form of tribes. Some travel and are called nomads others live in one place. A major part of the cultures of various tribes is the custom of marriage in some cases it is formalized while in others it is an informal affair. This paper discusses the marriage customs of three tribes and tries to evaluate their values. The three tribes are the Aztecs of North America, the Basseri living in Middle East and the !Kung people of the Kalahari desert in southern Africa. (more…)
